Abstract

Pemilihan jenis coating yang tepat pada kemasan luxury berbahan synthetic matte paper dengan tinta offset minyak sawit menjadi hal penting untuk dikaji guna menjaga kualitas visual sekaligus mendukung keberlanjutan lingkungan. Coating, baik water-based maupun Over print varnish (OPV), berperan menentukan tingkat kilap, stabilitas warna, dan ketahanan fisik hasil cetak, sementara tinta minyak sawit dikembangkan sebagai alternatif berkelanjutan pengganti mineral oil meski penggunaannya pada substrat non-absorbent menimbulkan tantangan tersendiri. Penelitian kuantitatif dengan metode eksperimen laboratorium ini menggunakan sampel cetak tinta offset CMYK berbasis minyak sawit pada synthetic matte paper dengan lima variasi perlakuan, yaitu tanpa coating, Water-based gloss , Waterbased matte, OPV Gloss, dan OPV Matte, yang diuji menggunakan parameter ketahanan gosok, ketahanan warna terhadap larutan kimia, densitas warna dan CIELAB, serta tingkat gloss permukaan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan Waterbased matte memberikan ketahanan gosok dan stabilitas estetika terbaik, sementara OPV Gloss unggul dalam reproduksi warna, sehingga Water-based matte direkomendasikan sebagai coating paling optimal untuk kemasan luxury yang ramah lingkungan.

Selecting the appropriate coating type for luxury packaging made of synthetic matte paper printed with palm oil-based offset ink is a critical area of study to maintain visual quality while supporting environmental sustainability. Coatings, both water-based and Overprint Varnish (OPV), play a decisive role in determining the gloss level, color stability, and physical resistance of the prints. Concurrently, palm oil ink has been developed as a sustainable alternative to mineral oil, despite the unique challenges posed by its application on nonabsorbent substrates. This quantitative study utilized a laboratory experimental method, analyzing CMYK offset print samples based on palm oil ink on synthetic matte paper. Five treatment variations were examined: non-coating, Water-based gloss , Water-based matte, OPV Gloss, and OPV Matte. These variants were evaluated using parameters including rub resistance, color fastness to chemical solutions, color density, CIELAB color space analysis, and surface gloss levels. The results demonstrated that the Water-based matte coating provided the superior rub resistance and aesthetic stability, whereas the OPV Gloss excelled in color reproduction. Consequently, Water-based matte is recommended as the most optimal coating for eco-friendly luxury packaging
