Abstract
The author created an animated film titled “The Sweetness of Sharing” to examine how warm and cool ambient colors can be applied as a visual communication medium to strengthen emotion and social empathy messages in children's animation, since color use in children's animation is still often limited to aesthetic aspects. This research used a Research and Development (R&D) method with a qualitative descriptive approach, applying the ADDIE model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation). Warm colors (red, orange, yellow) represent positive emotion and togetherness, while cool colors (blue, purple, grayish blue) depict reflective and emotional situations, implemented through color script, color palette, gradient map, and ambient shadow/occlusion. Data was collected via a questionnaire to 30 respondents aged 7–10 and interviews with two experts. Results show most respondents easily recognized time changes, scene atmosphere, character-background contrast, character emotion, and warm-cool mood differences, with 80% citing sky color as most helpful for understanding time and situation. Experts confirmed the color contrast, saturation, tone, ambient application, and palette consistency were adequate and effectively supported the narrative, proving that systematically designed warm and cool ambient colors effectively build emotional atmosphere and deliver social empathy messages to child audiences.
