Abstract
ABSTRACT
The production of furry 3D characters in animated films commonly relies on hair particle simulation to achieve realistic fur. However, this technique requires high computational resources, making it less efficient for the production of stylized animated short films. This study aims to optimize the 3D modeling of a juvenile orangutan character named Opan for the animated short film Cries Beneath the Trees by implementing the Hair Clumps and Stylized Fur Painting methods as an alternative to hair particle simulation. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach using a practice-based research design. Data were collected through literature review, observation, technical experimentation, and expert validation, and were analyzed based on polygon count, fur complexity, and viewport performance. The results show that the character model, featuring a quad-based topology with 23,268 faces, successfully supports the rigging and animation process. The proposed method achieved an average viewport performance of 22.73 FPS, outperforming hair particle simulation (19.44 FPS) and approaching the 24 FPS performance of the base model. Expert validation also confirmed that the method preserves the character's anatomical proportions while improving the efficiency of the production pipeline. Therefore, the proposed method is an effective alternative for creating furry 3D characters by balancing visual quality and production efficiency.
