Abstract

Visual Kei is a Japanese music subculture popularised by X Japan in the 1980s, characterised by a strong visual identity and a high degree of exclusivity. Prior to the pandemic, access to Visual Kei works and documentation was limited; however, post-COVID-19 digitalisation has driven a transformation in distribution and expanded its global reach. Figures such as Mana from Malice Mizer have reinforced the aesthetic appeal that has influenced international markets. In Indonesia, fan enthusiasm is growing, marked by HYDE’s concerts and the popularity of L’Arc-en-Ciel. Local bands such as Nameless Crown demonstrate significant potential, supported by fans’ interest in both the musical and fashion aspects. This research highlights the importance of developing ready-to-wear merchandise as a brand extension strategy and a means of strengthening the band’s visual identity. The findings indicate that innovative merchandise can enhance fanbase engagement whilst expanding the presence of Visual Kei in Indonesia.
